  Type of Flange

One has to decide by which means one wants to connect flange to the pipe or Vessel. Mainly following 6 types are very common...

»   Slip On
»   Lap Joint

»   Weld Neck
»   Threaded

»   Blind
»   Socket Weld

Apart from this Many a times Ring type joint flange or Tongue & groove flange or Spectacle flange are also few of the types which one has to decide Depending on the use.

Slip On Pipe Flanges

Slip-on flanges are designed to slide over the outside diameter of the pipe to which it will be welded. These flanges are attached to the pipe by fillet welding at the hub and at the end of the pipe inside the flange. Slip-on pipe flanges slip over the pipe. Slip-on pipe flanges are typically machined with an inside diameter of the pipe flange slightly larger than the outside diameter of the pipe. This allows the flange to slide over the pipe but to still have a somewhat snug fit. Slip-on pipe flanges are secured to the pipe with a fillet weld at the top and the bottom of the flanges. Further these pipe flanges are categorized as a ring or a hub. Both ring and hub pipe flanges are considered slip on pipe flanges because they both slip over the pipe. Slip on pipe flanges that consist of a flat ring have published specifications that range from 1/2" thru 144". Slip on Pipe flanges with a hub have published specifications that range from 1/2" thru 96".

Weld Neck Pipe Flanges

Weld neck pipe flanges are attached to the pipe by welding the pipe to the neck of the pipe flange. Used in conjunction with a "Lap joint Stub End", these flanges are nearly identical to a slip-on flange with the exception of a radius at the intersection of the flange face and the bore to accommodate the flanged portion of the stubbed.

This group of flanges is designed with a hub on the backside tapering to a diameter that will match the pipe to which it will be welded. These flanges are bored to match the inside diameter of the mating pipe so there will be no restriction of product flow. This allows for the transfer of stress from the weld neck pipe flanges to the pipe itself and also reduces high stress concentration at the base of the hub of the weld neck pipe flanges.

These flanges are often used for high pressure applications. To match the inside diameter of the pipe, the inside diameter of a weld neck pipe flange is machined. Weld Neck Pipe flanges with a hub have published specifications that range from 1/2" thru 96". Simplex Trading Company provides Weld Neck pipe flanges in all material grades, specifications and sizes.

Blind Pipe Flanges

Pipe flanges used to seal the end of a piping system or pressure vessel openings to prevent flow are Blind pipe flanges. Blind pipe flanges are commonly used for pressure testing the flow of liquid or gas through a pipe or vessel. These flanges also allow easy access to the pipe in the event that work must be done inside the line. Slip on Pipe flanges with a hub have published specifications that range from 1/2" thru 96". Blind pipe flanges are often used for high pressure applications. Blind pipe flanges in all material grades, specifications and sizes are provided by Simplex Trading Company.

Lap Joint Pipe Flanges

Flanges that slide over the pipe and are most commonly used with Stub End Fittings are the Lap Joint Pipe. Used in conjunction with a "Lap joint Stub End," these flanges are nearly identical to a slip-on flange with the exception of a radius at the intersection of the flange face and the bore to accommodate the flanged portion of the stubbed. The Lap Joint pipe flange is free to rotate around the stub end while a pipe is typically welded to the Stub End. The benefit of this is that there will not be any issues with bolt hole alignment. These flanges are often used for applications that require frequent dismantling. Slip on Pipe flanges with a hub have published specifications that range from 1/2" thru 24". Sizes above 24" are produced as lap joints to slip on dimensions. Lap Joint pipe flanges in all material grades, specifications and sizes are provided by Simplex Trading Company.

Threaded Pipe Flanges

Threaded flanges are threaded in the bore to match an external thread on the pipe. The threads are tapered to create a seal between the flange and pipe as the tapers approach the same diameter. These flanges are normally designed for low pressure, non-cyclic applications. Threaded pipe flanges are similar to slip-on pipe flanges except the bore of threaded pipe flange has tapered threads. Pipes that have external threads are used along with Threaded pipe flanges. These pipe flanges has an advantage that it can be attached without welding. Threaded pipe flanges are used Often for small diameter, high pressure requirements. Slip on Pipe flanges with a hub have published specifications that range from 1/2" thru 24". Simplex Trading Company provides Slip-On pipe flanges in all material grades, specifications and sizes.

Socket Weld Pipe Flanges

Socket-weld pipe flanges are used on smaller sizes of high pressure pipes. These flanges are developed for use in small diameter, high pressure lines. Internally welded socket type flanges are typically used in chemical process, hydraulic lines and steam distribution lines. They have a counter bore from the hub side slightly larger than the outside diameter of the pipe. By inserting the pipe into the socket end and applying fillet weld around the top, these pipe flanges are attached which allows for a smooth bore and better flow of the fluid or gas inside of the pipe. Slip on Pipe flanges with a hub have published specifications that range from 1/2" thru 24". Socket Weld pipe flanges in all material grades, specifications and sizes are proved by Simplex Trading Company.
